When it comes to dressing everyone for your family session there are a few standard guidelines to follow that will make a huge difference in the final product. You are investing your hard earned money into a hard copy of family memories, so you want your images to reflect your family for who they are, so you all look your very best. The outfit co-ordination can make or break it!
Firstly, co-ordinate your family’s clothing, rather than ‘match’ it. This can be applied to any colour scheme you have in mind.
Avoid bold patterns and logos that may be distracting, opt for bold colours, or stripes instead. A subtle pattern, such as a floral pattern in a girls dress, is fine.
Dress for the weather. Being rugged up in jeans and jackets on a stinking hot day at the beach isn’t fun for anyone! Nor is freezing your little tush off so you can wear that pretty summer dress in mid winter!
Think about your location, think about the colours, you don’t want to blend in with your surroundings.
Also, consider the personality of your family. Are you all loud, vibrant and fun? Or quiet, gentle and affectionate? Or perhaps you are a funky bunch looking for something more urban?
For example, the natural earthy tones against a sparkling blue ocean create a soft and romantic feel, whereas soft blues and yellows against the ocean create a more light hearted fun feel and bright vibrant colours just scream loud, cheeky and loads of fun! Different colour combinations at the same location can have a completely different end result! Don’t forget to bring your personality to match your wardrobe!
If you want these images on your wall in your home, think about your colour scheme in the room the images will go in; are they neutral, beachy or bright and colourful, etc. Try to tie it in and make your family photographs a real statement in your home!
When dressing for your maternity session, it is a great idea to bring a few outfit changes. Get a few different looks in a few different nearby locations to show off your radiant, glowing baby body in all it’s beauty!
I have put together a few examples of combinations for families. Obviously this is just a guide, your own taste and creativity should flow on from here…
